Punch the Monkey, the infamous baby monkey that the media loves. For those who don’t know who Punch the Monkey is, Punch was born on a humid morning in July at the Ichikawa City Zoo in Japan. From the moment of Punch’s birth, his mother abandoned him with no grooming, no warmth, no instinctive pull to hold him close.
Due to this absence of care, from not only his mother but from other monkeys in the enclosure, zookeepers stepped in, feeding him, warming him, and carrying him. They knew they could never replace the constant physical presence a baby macaque needs so, they gave him something that could; a large, orange orangutan plushie from Ikea. Punch and the stuffed orangutan becamae inseparable and many people believe that it’s because Punch found a surrogate parent, and a source of warmth and care in the toy.
When videos of this adorable monkey being rejected and clinging onto a stuffed toy began surfacing the internet, millions of people began reacting emotionally, making edits on TikTok and even some people uploading videos crying over the baby macaque. Early videos that had surfaced included Punch being pushed aside or ignored by other macaques. These clips circulated fast with fans of Punch being concerned for this exclusion.
On the bright side, as of early February, more videos have resurfaced where Punch is seen spending more time with the troop, engaging in play, riding on the backs of other monkeys, and participating in group activities. The zoo reported this measurable progress and emphasized that his integration is gradual but ongoing, and that his social development is moving in a positive direction.
As Punch’s story continues to unfold, it’s clear why so many people have become invested in this tiny macaque’s journey. What started as a heartbreaking case of rejection has slowly turned into something hopeful, with real signs that he’s finding his place among the other monkeys. The zoo’s updates show steady progress, and the newer videos that have surfaced, back this up. He’s playing more, bonding more, and relying a little less on his plush orangutan. Punch may have begun life at a disadvantage, but watching him grow, adapt, and finally be welcomed by his troop has become a reminder of how resilience can look soft, small, and unexpectedly sweet. For now, he remains the internet’s favorite baby monkey.
