Denver police are investigating a fatal shooting that left a man dead while he was walking his dog Sunday afternoon in the Five Points neighborhood. The incident occurred shortly before 1 p.m. near the intersection of 32nd Street and Arapahoe Street.
According to investigators, the suspect was identified as 22‑year‑old Kaylen Stroter and he was first seen assaulting a woman inside a nearby building. Witnesses reported that neighbors intervened, helping the woman to escape. As she ran to her car, Stroter allegedly fired at the woman’s car before going back inside.
Police say Stroter then returned to the street with a gun. At the same time, a man who lived in the area was walking his dog along the sidewalk. Witnesses told officers the victim and the suspect did not know each other and had no prior interaction. According to one witness statement, Stroter confronted the man, asking him “what are you looking at?” and then shot him at close range.
The victim died at the scene. His name has not been released pending notification of family members. The dog luckily was not harmed.
Officers located Stroter not too far away near Curtis Park and took him into custody. A handgun was recovered in the area where he was detained. Police later confirmed that Stroter was on probation for a previous robbery conviction and had pending court hearings in another Denver case.
Residents in the neighborhood described the shooting as sudden and alarming, noting that the area is typically active with pedestrians, families, and dog‑walkers during the day. Several neighbors gathered outside right after the shooting as police blocked off the street and processed the scene.
The Denver Police Department has classified the case as a homicide. Stroter is expected to face charges including first‑degree murder and additional counts related to the earlier assault.
The investigation remains ongoing.
