Pinata by Freddie Gibbs and Madlib is one of the best rap albums of all time. This was a debut for the duo and boy they started with a bang. The production is top tier as the samples and chops are flawless front to back. The lyrics and topics vary greatly from rapper Freddie Gibbs. Gibbs raps about topics from his favorite food spot to living in the streets. Each flow he has is different as he can take it slow or speed up to match the beat.
Certain songs stand out the most at least to me.
- Thuggin’ – a very psychedelic and trippy beat and is one of my favorite in the genre. Gibbs is rapping fast and matches the beats pace perfectly
- Harold’s – a very upbeat instrumental and Gibbs raps about the best restaurant in his town and makes for an interesting song.
- Lakers – west coast tribute talking about LA. The beat is slow and heavy hitting with a great hook from Ab-soul
- knicks – a chill beat talking about New York and seeing LeBron and Jordan both play in Madison square garden.
- deeper – talking about a break up and how it cut him deep.
- pinata- 9 minute song what feels like a rap battle between Domo Genesis, G-Wiz, Casey Veggies, Suleman and Meechy, Very underground rappers who all deliver some of their best verses of their careers on this song.
This album is top three from the 2010’s in rap. Only falling behind To Pimp A Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar, and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy By Kanye West. However this is top in the genre because of the masterclass production that was truly ahead of its time. the lyrics and topics round this album out and it the best work from Freddie Gibbs and Madlib.
