Today is Ash Wednesday, the day that will begin the season of lent for catholics. All of Holy Family attended an all school mass today. At this mass all of the students and staff had ashes placed on their foreheads in a cross shape. The ashes remind us that we are committed to God. As the ashes are placed the phrase “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return”. This phrase reminds those who receive ashes that one day they were created by God from the earth and when they pass away they return back into the earth before they go with God to heaven.
Lent is a 40 day season of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving that represents Jesus 40 days in the dessert before his crucifixion and resurrection. As Catholics we are called to abstain from something in this season. I spoke with many Holy Family community members to see what they will be abstaining from during this Lenten season.
Senior Ava says, “I am going to give up unnecessary spending in order to detach from material things and focus more on Christ. I will also be nurturing my faith life by listening to a Christ centered podcast instead of music in the morning. This will keep me disciplined during lent. I will also be getting a job so I can put my time into helping others instead of myself.”
Ms. Disberger says, “I am going to give up social media. I am also going to work on praying one rosary a week using the Hallow app. I am also working on being positive in negative situations. This has been my goal for lent since I was in high school.”
Senior Samantha, “I am giving up sweet treats. I am going to donate the money I was spending on treats to the rice bowl for catholic relief services.”
No matter what you decide to do during this lenten season. Always remember God’s great sacrifice of his son for our salvation.
