It’s Quarterback Season

My reactions to some of the top quarterbacks drafted

This year, the 2024 NFL Draft was hosted in Detroit, with the event taking place between Thursday night and Saturday evening. There were some really exciting picks this year, and I think every team got at least one player that will make an instant impact once games start. Although I’d love to cover every pick, that would take me ages to complete. Instead, I’m going to give my personal opinion and feedback on some of the top quarterbacks drafted. I like all of these players, but I will admit that some of the picks seem a little questionable. Here’s what I got:

Caleb Williams tops Caitlin Clark record for draft jersey sales - Los Angeles TimesCaleb Williams (#1 overall / Chicago Bears)

Anyone could’ve seen this pick coming. Ever since Williams won the Heisman with USC in 2022 (and even before that), he has been projected as the #1 overall pick, and this pick was almost completely locked in when Chicago traded Justin Fields to the Steelers in March. I like the pick, and with weapons like DJ Moore, Keenan Allen, and rookie Rome Odunze to pass to, I think Williams makes a good leader for the Chicago offense.

2024 NFL Draft Grades: Washington Commanders high marks Jayden Daniels - Hogs HavenJayden Daniels (#2 overall / Washington Commanders)

I really like this pick too. With my brother going to LSU this year, I had the privilege of seeing Daniels play twice in person, and he’s even more electrifying than analysts will tell you. I think both he and WR Luke McCaffrey will bring a spark to this Washington offense, and I think he’ll also meet the expectations Sam Howell was supposed to live up to last year. Daniels will easily move the Commanders to their first winning season since 2016.

Knee-jerk reactions to new Patriots QB Drake Maye - Pats PulpitDrake Maye (#3 overall / New England Patriots)

I’m also a big fan of this pick. New England quickly found out that Mac Jones was not the answer, and last year Bailey Zappe did his best to keep up with the impossibly high standards that Bill Belichick and Patriots fans alike set for their team in the decade prior. I think Maye will be able to live up to the hype, and he too will bring a livelihood to New England’s offense that hasn’t been seen since the Brady/Gronk era. Even though they drafted a form of competition for the job in QB Joe Milton III in the later rounds of the draft, I think that Maye will have no issue getting the starting job and leading New England to their former glory down the road.

2024 NFL Draft: Falcons still feel justified in drafting Michael Penix Jr. despite signing Kirk CousinsMichael Penix Jr. (#8 overall / Atlanta Falcons)

Why?!!?! You guys just signed Kirk Cousins to 4-year/$180M contract and you draft a quarterback? Don’t get me wrong, I have loved how Penix has played in this last year at Washington, but drafting a quarterback should not have even been in the discussion this year. Got to love the player, but this is an absolutely brain-dead draft pick by Terry Fontenot and the rest of the Falcons management. I’d say they blew their chance to get a really great player early in the draft, but they’ll still have a similar draft position next year.

What Bo Nix said at introductory press conference after being drafted by Denver Broncos - oregonlive.comBo Nix (#12 overall / Denver Broncos)

Lastly, we have Bo Nix. I know there are a lot of mixed feelings from Broncos fans, but I personally like the pick. The recently-added Zach Wilson cannot be taken seriously to lead this downtrodden team to the playoffs, and I think Nix has the experience as a starter and the leadership necessary to give Broncos fans a taste of success again. Nix is also reunited with fellow Duck WR Troy Franklin, and I think these two will have a strong connection within Denver’s offense. Although Broncos country might not believe in Nix, I sure do and I think he’ll do great things down the road.
