Kevin McGonigle could be the spark the Tigers offense needs. He is 21 years old and ready to make a mark on the MLB. He is a hard-hitting lefty that plays great defense on the left side of the infield.
The extension begins in 2027 and runs through 2034, covering what would have been McGonigle’s arbitration years and his first three free‑agent seasons. It includes a $14 million signing bonus, paid in installments, and guarantees salaries that escalate significantly as the contract progresses.
- 2027: $1 million
- 2028: $7 million
- 2029: $16 million
- 2030: $21 million
- 2031: $22 million
- 2032–2034: $23 million per year
The contract also includes a $5 million assignment bonus each time he is traded.
This contract comes after Konnor Griffin’s huge rookie contract, but McGonigle has had a way better start to the year. He is hitting .313 and hit at the top of the lineup the whole year. He is a very exciting and energetic player that makes you pay attention every time he is up to bat.
McGonigle moved quickly through the Tigers’ farm system after being drafted 37th overall in 2023.He impressed in rookie ball and Low‑A with his ability to control the strike zone, then broke out at High‑A West Michigan in 2024–25 by hitting for average, getting on base at an elite rate, and beginning to show real power. His promotion to Double‑A Erie in 2025 was the real test, and he handled it with the same maturity. He played outstanding in this year’s spring training and the Tigers front office decided to have him skip Triple-A and go straight to The Show.
If McGonigle can continues to produce at a high and consistent level, he will be an all-star in no time and always be a huge part of the Tigers. He has showed he is ready for all the bright lights that come from The Show.
