Staff from Florida came up with a new and absurd idea to help a Rhino. At the Florida Wildlife Rehabilitation Zoo they put their heads together and came up with a plan to help a Rhino see. Dr. Lena Morales led the team at West Palm Beach Florida and they partnered with Palm Beach Zoo and Conservation society.
Across the ocean in South Africa, a young wild Rhino named Kifaru was slowly loosing his eyesight. He was starting to become blind which would lead him to struggle out in the wild. The Rhino had a rare corneal infection that had clouded both of his eyes. This left him stumbling throughout the wild, and vulnerable to other predators. A group of local veterinarians used all their resources to try and help the poor Rhino but the infection continued to worsen along with his cloudy eye site. The veterinarians were so lost they decided to ask a zoo from Florida for help with healing the Rhino. They decided to ask because they had heard about the many experiments they were doing in medicine to help wildlife.
Dr. Morale studied scans of the Rhinos eye for days when she thought of such an absurd idea to cure him. She thought of making a custom designed, drone deliverable Rhino eye-gel pack infused with a specialized probiotic culture developed in Florida. The gel was kept cold, applied daily, and placed directly onto the Rhinos eye without him attacking the vertenerians.
The team began training the Rhino with food rewards until he was able to tolerate the drone hovering over him. They also made biodegradable pouch to set it on the eye and burst easily when making contact. On the first attempt it worked perfectly.
The team continued this for two weeks every morning until slowly the cloudiness in his eyes began to fade. Eventually the Rhino could see clearly again and De. Morales was amazed by her ridiculous plan.
