Are you new to driving? Or looking for tips on ways to be a safe driver and avoid collisions?
Well, I will be giving the top 3 ways to always stay safe on the road and avoid hurting yourself or another person.
- The most important thing while driving is seat belts. Seatbelts avoid fatality by 50%. Even though 90% of Americans wear their seatbelts, nearly 50% of passenger vehicle occupants killed in 2025 were not wearing seat belts. Annually, 15,000 lives are saved due to seatbelt use. Many believe seatbelts are useless and annoying while driving. However, they will genuinely save your life if you are ever in that situation. A lack of a seatbelt means a higher chance of potentially being pushed through a windshield and experiencing something very scary. Wear your seatbelt!
- The second most important thing to avoid when starting to drive is distraction. Distracted driving is the number one cause of car accidents in the United States. Our number one distraction these days is phones. Drivers who are using their phone while driving have a 240% higher chance of death or injury than someone who is not. In 2025, 4,000 deaths occurred because of texting and driving. Many may think they can simultaneously look at their phone and drive, but nobody prepares you for a harsh stop waiting for you when you look up. Phones are not the only distraction. The radio, the air conditioning, and looking in the mirror are all things that could change your life in seconds. Anything can be a distraction when you are driving and not watching the road.
- The third most important thing to manage while driving is speed. Speeding makes up for 30% of all crashes, and kills an average of 32 people a day. Speeding is second highest for causes of crashes in America. Speeding endangers every single person on the road. Speeding also increases your chance of a rollover or a serious injury.
These three things are the top reasons for car crashes and crashing fatalitys. Be safe on the roads and never go on your phone while driving!
