This time last year the Holy Family cheer team had a team of 4 and no coach. Their future was completely uncertain. Many of the team members didn’t even think that they would have a team this year. But against all odds the Holy Family Cheerleaders headed to UCA high school nationals last week. They made history.
For the first time in program history they competed at nationals. They brought three routines that they have worked hard all season to perfect. Their first routine was a combines spirit game-day routine with the poms program. This routine made finals and placed 5th in the nation. The second routine they performed in was game-day. This was a very difficult division and with an amazing routine they did not make it past prelims. But they scored their highest scoring routine all season. A win for them.
The final routine they performed was their performance routine. This routine was the one that took them all the way to Sunday. Their first routine they made semi finals and were seeded fifth. Then on Sunday they competed in semi-finals and finals and ultimately ended their night 9th in the nation. This routine was extra special because it was choreographed by two Holy Family cheer alumni.
Assistant coach Ally Merrion said, “Getting to go to nationals was an experience I wouldn’t trade for anything. I could not be prouder of these girls and the work they put into their routines. Not only did they make Holy Family history by competing at the national level but they became finalists. I am honored to be a part of this journey in each one of their lives”. Coach Ally is a Holy Family cheer alumni herself and having her leading the way for us this weekend made a huge impact on our team.
The Holy Family cheer had an amazing year at nationals, that will pave the way for the future of Holy Family cheerleading. I can’t wait to see where this team goes in the next couple of years.
