Rebecca Johnson woke up one September morning with a sharp pain in her lower back. At 37, she assumed it was her mattress or maybe sciatica. Rebecca said, “I took a Tylenol and went to work,” she said.
Johnson teaches special education at Dupont Elementary in Hopewell, Virginia.
By the time she arrived at school, the pain had worsened, and she was hunched over and struggling to walk.
“I told my husband it felt like labor pains, but I knew that couldn’t be true,” she recalled.
Thinking it was a kidney stone, Johnson and her husband, Lee, rushed to TriCities Hospital. Nurses agreed her symptoms matched kidney stones and placed her in a small room. Fluid trickled down, soaking her lower half. She assumed it was just her uncontrollable bladder, but as she sat onto the bedside commode, she realized there was movement within.
The nearby nurse stared in shock then shouted, “That’s a head!”
Johnson realized that she was giving birth. After a few pushes, she delivered a healthy baby girl weighing 7 pounds, 8 ounces. They named her Carlee Evangeline.
“I was screaming, and my husband looked white as a sheet,” Johnson said. “We were both completely stunned.”
Years earlier, the couple was told by doctors that they couldn’t have children without medical help. So, after fertility treatments, they welcomed their first daughter, Clara, in 2016. In 2024, they were surprised by a natural pregnancy with their second daughter, Cecilia. “We never imagined it would happen again,” Johnson said.
Earlier this year, Johnson noticed her breast milk dried up faster than expected but she simply believed it was hormones. After two pregnancy tests came back negative, she has polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and hadn’t gotten her period after her last pregnancy, she assumed everything was normal.
TriCities Hospital doesn’t even have a labor and delivery unit, so the staff were just as shocked. They noted that they see surprise births like this about once a year.
Back home, neighbors and friends quickly stepped in with baby clothes, food, and supplies.
Looking at her three daughters, Johnson smiled and said, “It’s amazing how life works out. We didn’t plan her, but she’s our little miracle.”
