For only the second time in program history, this past Saturday the Holy Family Varsity cheerleading earned a trip to nationals in Florida. The cheerleaders put a brand new routine on the floor, in a brand new division. They took home first place in their division and a bid to nationals.
This division at UCA is called the intermediate division. According to the UCA website this division is for teams who want to compete at the regional and national level with teams at the same technical level. This division is perfect for our Holy Family cheerleaders as this will be the first time this program is headed to nationals.
I spoke with the competitive captain Araiya Herrera of this team about how it felt to win in this moment. She said, “When I found out that we were gonna get a bid to nationals , I was excited because last year we didn’t get to compete at all so it was kind of motivating that we were actually gonna get a bid and actually go to nationals. Just sitting there with my team, none of us believed that we were gonna get a bid and all of us were kind of like, no way this is gonna happen. When they announced our name, we felt the win. We felt like all of our hard work had finally paid off. We put our best on that floor and tried as hard as we can. This win gives me hope that we are good and we have a solid team. We have a chance at winning nationals with as strong and hard working as this team is.”
This interview captured how it feels to win when you know you have put your best out on that floor. With such an amazing set of captains and coaches this season there is no where this team can’t go. The varsity cheer team with continue to compete, with there league competition tonight at 6:44 p.m. at Erie.
