As the lights in the gym flicker on each night, the first sound of squeaking sneakers on the hardwood indicates one thing: basketball season is approaching. The girls’ basketball team is in the heart of camp week, practicing from 7 to 9 p.m. in preparation for tryouts next week and a Saturday scrimmage the week after Thanksgiving. The week is much more than conditioning as it sets the season’s tone.
In nightly sessions filled with shooting, defense, and teamwork drills, players compete under the intense scrutiny of coaches looking for commitment of hard work, hustle, and chemistry between returning players and newcomers. Camp week is where we build the foundation and where the coaches get an idea on the upcoming team.
The practices are tailored to be physically and mentally demanding on the players. Through running sprints to perfecting defensive rotations, the team is reminded that every little bit in November counts in January. “We’ve been focusing a lot on intensity and communication,” said Priya Lucas, “Everyone is trying to prove themselves before tryouts, but we’re also learning how to play as a team.”
Coaches say this week is not about individual performances but more about developing one common mindset. Team bonding and leadership potential, too, remain top of the agenda. “We find out captains on Saturday,” noted head coach Mike Quintana. “Everyone on this team is still expected to be a leader.”
Tryouts will determine who officially makes the roster after camp week is concluded. The players know that competition will be fierce, but there seems to be a sense of excitement and cohesion in the gym. The upcoming Thanksgiving weekend scrimmage will serve as an early test of what the team can bring to the court this year. Many will get a chance to see where all of their preparation pays off in real game situations. Anticipation is running high as the season draws near. Whether it’s through late-night drills, team huddles, or words of encouragement shouted across the court, there’s one thing that’s clear- This girls’ basketball team is ready to win state!
