Holy Family’s Mock Trial team, led by Father Joe, Mr. Rich Everett, and Mrs. Jody Alderman have been working hard since November to prepare for the Colorado Mock Trial state regionals this past weekend.

Holy Family has a Junior Varsity team and a Varsity team that were both sent to regionals to compete for a spot at state.

This year instead of being given team codes, teams were hilariously assigned last names of female celebrities. The JV team was named Streisand after Barbara Streisand, and the Varsity team was named Spears, after Brittany Spears.

For this year’s case, the prosecution was suing the company Lush for causing Dakota Weirs to develop Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma from fertilizer. The defendants were trying to prove that Weirs’ cancer was not caused by Lush’s fertilizer.

Sessina Abraha, one of the senior team captains says that she was, “impressed with how well the freshmen and sophomores did with their first time doing Mock Trial”

Because regionals were online, there were some mishaps with WiFi cutting out and not being able to hear attorneys or witnesses. This caused for most of the trials to end up taking well over two hours each.

In total, teams Spears and Streisand competed in seven trials and did exceptionally well.

Holy Family received several awards for their efforts. Two of our witnesses, Riley Plock, and Samantha Bennett, made top five witnesses in the region, the JV team received the professionalism award, and the Varsity came in first overall for regionals, earning their place at state.

Father Joe says, “we have a lot of talent on our team and we managed to pull it together at the end”

We can’t wait for our team to kill it at state on March 18-19!
