By now, I am sure that everyone has heard of the new game Wordle. This has become something that people of all ages have begun to play, but how did it start.

Josh Wardle, a software engineer from Brooklyn, created Wordle for his friend, Ms. Shah because he knew that she loved word games, and he decided to call in Wordle as a play on his own name. After he realized how much she loved this game, he made the decision to share it with his family. They thought that this game was very fun as well, so after getting such positive feedback from them, he thought that he might be on to something.

In October of 2021, he released his game to the public. It has been growing at an insane rate welcoming anyone to try to guess a five letter word in six tries. This game will tell you when you have guesses a letter correctly, and when you have put it in the correct spot.

Having 300,000 people playing on the second day after it was released, it makes you wonder, how did this game become so popular so quickly though?

For starters, it has become something that people all over the world talk about. Wherever you go, there is a good chance that you will hear, “Did you get the Wordle for today?” or “How many tries did it take you to get the word for today?” The ability to converse about the word without giving it away has become of fun and easy topic of conversation.

Secondly, because Mr. Wardle decided to make it a once a day game, it gives people a sense a scarcity leaving them wanting more. It is a daily challenge that people have come to look forward to. Mr. Wardle says, “It’s something that encourages you to spend three minutes a day, and that’s it. Like, it doesn’t want any more of your time than that.” Wordle is a Love Story by NYT

The New York Times has come out with many games similar to Wordle such as the Spelling Bee or their Crossword puzzle which was a huge inspiration for Mr. Wardle and has allowed him to create a great game for all to play.
