The Beijing Winter Games Are Under Way

Day 1

  • In the skiathlon, Therese Johaug from Norway was followed by Natalia Nepryaeva of the Russian Olympic Committee and Teresa Stadlober of Austria, who won the first silver and bronze medals in Beijing.   • Hailey Langland, a 21-year-old snowboarder who is making her Olympic comeback with a new strategy, was one of three American women to qualify for the slopestyle final on Sunday. Jamie Anderson (fifth) and Julia Marino (sixth) are two-time gold medalists. Langland came in ninth place.
  • The United States’ mixed relay biathlon team made a strong showing before placing eighth in a race won by Norway. The United States has never won a medal in a biathlon competition.
  • The US women’s hockey team improved to 2-0 with a 5-0 win over the Russian Olympic Committee on Saturday.

Day 2

  • Johaug was followed in the skiathlon by Russian Olympic Committee’s Natalia Nepryaeva and Austria’s Teresa Stadlober, who won the first silver and bronze medals in Beijing. The American Jessie Diggins came in sixth place.

  • Johan Clarey, 41, of France, won silver in the men’s downhill, making him the oldest medalist in Olympic Alpine skiing history.
  • Ireen Wüst, a Dutch speedskater, set an Olympic record in the 1,500 meters and became the first woman to win a gold medal in five different Olympics.
  • In men’s slopestyle snowboarding, American Red Gerard, the 2018 gold medallist, finished fourth. Max Parrot and Mark McMorris of Canada won gold and bronze, respectively, while Su Yiming of China won silver, and all three have incredible stories to tell.

Day 4

  • Nathan Chen, an American figure skater, won the men’s short program ahead of a pair of Japanese skaters. The free skate finishes the men’s competition on Thursday
  • Ryan Cochran-Siegle, a 29-year-old descendant of American skiing aristocracy, won an unexpected silver medal in the men’s super-G, giving the US men’s Alpine skiing

  • Canada won 4-2 in women’s hockey after scoring three goals in the second period and holding the United States scoreless in the third. In the quarterfinals on Friday morning, the United States will face the Czech Republic.
  • Eileen Gu, an 18-year-old freestyle skier from the United States who is competing for China in the Winter Olympics, won gold in the women’s large air final.
  • Natalie Geisenberger of Germany earned her sixth gold medal in luge, and Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo of Norway won his fourth gold medal in cross-country skiing.
