On Tuesday November 9th, Unity in Diversity organized for Native American dancers to come and present some of their culture to HF students and faculty during an assembly.

The presentation consisted of songs and dances performed by an indigenous family and they performed in their traditional outfits.

Many walked out of the assembly amazed at the beauty of the culture like Senior Leah Fuller. She says, “it was important to make the first step at Holy Family to open up the door to other cultures.”

Although the presentation had many positive reactions, there was a point where some rude reactions from some of the students.

Sessina Abraha, a member of the Unity in Diversity team said that, “our school didn’t handle it very maturely because a lot of people laughed during the national anthem.”

The moderator of Unity in Diversity, Kateri Williams, says that the intention behind the presentation was to celebrate “the rich contributions of the native people” because November is Indigenous Peoples Heritage month. In regard to the students who laughed, Mrs. Williams says, “it shows the need to do more of these types of things so that people will learn to appreciate it. Sometimes people make fun of  and mock things that they don’t know because they feel uncomfortable and so the only way we can become comfortable is to continually be exposed to things that are different from our own personal lived experience.”

Chinwe Onwere, a member of the Unity in Diversity team says that in the future, the team hopes to “continue to spread awareness and meaningful conversations about diversity and social issues present not only in our school, but also our community, and world.”
