The battle in the House of Representatives continues on as republicans are struggling to narrow down and find a candidate to elect. Although they hold majority in the house it still seems that there is problems within the party stopping the election from going on. They are gathering behind closed doors this morning to try and get a nomination through so this drama can finally be done.
Rep. Gary Palmer of Alabama dropped out this morning, following Rep. Dan Meuser of Pennsylvania’s exit last night. leaving seven candidates still in the running. Those candidates being, Tom Emmer of Minnesota, Mike Johnson of Louisiana, Jack Bergman of Michigan, Byron Donalds of Florida, Kevin Hern of Oklahoma, Austin Scott of Georgia and Pete Sessions of Texas.
The reason the election is proving to be so hard is a candidate needs 217 votes to be nominated and there are only 221 republicans in the house. This means the entire republican party would need to essentially vote in unison in order to come to a conclusion about the new speaker. However, despite this being very hard to achieve there is much optimism from the House of Representatives that there will be a new speaker of the house today.
Once a new speaker of the house is elected it will allow major government decisions to begin going through again, such as major decisions on what to do about the situation in Israel right now. The government has been stunted for the multiple weeks now since former speaker of the house Kevin McCarthy was removed from his position.
The biggest thing that needs to be avoided in the newest election is taking 15 different ballots in order to come to a decision. If there can be a clear concise winner quickly that would be the most beneficial thing for everyone.
