Grateful Hearts for Christmas

Preparing my heart for Christmas this year has been a challenge. In a year with so many things to be upset about, finding joy can be a challenge. Sometimes no matter how hard you try, it can be difficult to recognize the blessings in your life.

The phrase “the reason for the season” is one we may all be familiar with by this point. Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus, the Messiah, the Savior of the world. However, as often as we hear of the Nativity or light Advent wreaths, the importance of the Advent season is easy to push to the side in exchange for expensive gifts wrapped in a pretty bow. We do many things to help us to get into the “holiday spirit.” But how do we prepare ourselves? And no, I’m not talking about setting up and decorating trees in our homes, hanging stockings by the fireplace, drinking hot cocoa, and wearing Christmas pajamas and fuzzy socks. Our hearts need to be ready to accept the gift from God of His son, Jesus. Instead of waiting in line for the newest game console or iPhone, why aren’t we waiting for the coming of our Lord? Rather than receiving gifts, why aren’t we giving more? Instead of spending time binge-watching Hallmark movies, why aren’t we volunteering for the less fortunate?

Preparing my heart for Christmas this year has been a challenge. In a year with so many things to be upset about, finding joy can be a challenge. Sometimes no matter how hard you try, it can be difficult to recognize the blessings in your life. If this applies to you, I encourage you to spend a moment to yourself in silence. You can pray, or just think. It’s easier to think with a clear, quiet mind and heart. I have tried to do this a lot more this year, and it has definitely helped me with trusting in God and thanking Him for my life.

It has hit me through these meditations just how fortunate I am. I have a family, a house, a convenient means of transportation, a good education and access to college, a way to earn money, clothes, a bed, food on the table, fresh water, clean air. I have been blessed with so many things that a majority of this world has not. Reflecting on this, I don’t understand why I was given these things – why I have money in my bank account and a supportive family, why I have a new phone and access to anything I might need. One look around any city and you will see too many people who are not so lucky. The blessings we have been given in life are from God, but they are not meant to be used for selfishness. Give what you can, and be grateful for whatever you have. Taking the time to thank God will help you to have a grateful and generous heart, which is a great thing to have in this Advent season especially.

Christmastime is the most wonderful time of the year… for some. For others, it is a reminder of another year without a loved one, another winter without a home, and another holiday without a joyful heart. As you open up your presents this year, remember to spend a moment in gratitude. Look up from your presents and see the gifts all around you – gifts from God that cannot be given a price tag.
