The Nebraska volleyball program has established a legacy of excellence over the years, but the 2025 Cornhuskers are performing at a level that surpasses even their high standards. In the first half of the season, their offensive efficiency has reached unprecedented heights, positioning them to break records that have stood for almost four decades.
Leading the nation with a .332 hitting percentage, Nebraska is on track to surpass the school record of .331 established in 1986. That record has stood the test of time through numerous talented Husker teams, making its possible breaking all the more notable. Achieving this would mark the first time since 2007 that Nebraska has exceeded the .300 mark for an entire season.
The key to it all: Bergen Reilly’s growth as Nebraska’s setter has been crucial to the team’s offensive surge. Following two seasons where she directed the attack to respectable hitting percentages of .273 and .284, the junior has taken her performance to a higher level. Head coach Lindsay Busboom Kelly has commended her innate skills—especially her ability to effectively use back-row attackers to keep opponents on their toes—that can’t easily be taught.
Back-row attacks have become increasingly prevalent in women’s college volleyball, evolving from their previous role as strategies mainly seen in elite international play. Nebraska features outside hitters Harper Murray and Teraya Sigler, who offer back-row hitting options in every rotation. The team also utilizes occasional back-row sets to opposite hitter Virginia Adriano and middle blocker Andi Jackson, adding offensive variety that prevents opponents from concentrating their defensive efforts solely on front-row attackers.
This well-rounded approach makes Nebraska dangerous in all six rotations. The Huskers boast hitting percentages above .300 in five rotations, with their lowest at .280—still outperforming the team totals of 14 out of 18 Big Ten conference teams. Jackson noted that this distribution forces opposing defenses to cover all players, rather than focusing solely on individual stars.
The Huskers will take on Northwestern and Michigan State this weekend as they pursue an undefeated season with the possibility of making history within reach.
