The Kansas City Chiefs entered the 2025 NFL season with high expectations, having dominated the AFC for three consecutive years. However, the season has begun with more adversity than expected. Through five weeks, the Chiefs have a 2–3 record, making it their worst start since the 2021 season.
The season opened with back-to-back losses to the Chargers and Eagles, both close games that exposed weaknesses in the Chiefs’ defense and offense. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been one of the only bright spots on the team. He has no offensive line to block for him and no wide receivers to throw to. Yet, in Weeks 3 and 4, the Chiefs bounced back with wins over the Giants and Ravens. Both opponents were significantly inferior, but the Chiefs still managed to pull out two wins.
Mahomes remains the face of the franchise, leading the team in both passing and rushing yards. His performance last night against the Jaguars really demonstrated this. He surpassed 300 passing yards and showcased his ability to move. Wide receiver Tyquan Thornton has cemented himself as one of Mahomes’ favorite wide receivers, while rookie Brashard Smith impressed with 130 kick return yards. Tight end Travis Kelce, though quiet throughout most of the game, scored his second touchdown of the season against Jacksonville. Despite some highlights throughout the game, the Chiefs’ defense has struggled with penalties and turnovers. Injuries, including the loss of defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah, have further hurt the Chiefs’ ability to win. The Chiefs suffered another tough loss to the Jaguars, finishing 31-28. The Chiefs are now 2-3.
Looking ahead, the Chiefs face a critical stretch of games, including matchups against the Lions, Raiders, and Commanders. If Mahomes continues to perform at a high level and others around him step up, Kansas City could change the story of their season. The season is far from over, and with Andy Reid at the helm, the Chiefs have the leadership and talent to turn the ship around.
