The MLB postseason has officially kicked off with the Wild Card round. Three out of the four matchups went down to the final game.
Detroit Tigers at the Clevland Guardians. Tigers win the series 2-1.
This divisional rivalry was intense throughout the whole regular season. The Tigers had a historic meltdown towards the end of the regular season by losing their last five series and narrowly losing the division. The Tigers didn’t let that effect there play as they beat the Guardians in 3 games to move on to the American League Division Series. Tarik Skubal was dominate in game one having 14 strikeouts and leading the Tigers to a game one win. The Guardians took game two and forced a game three. In game three, both teams started slow, but a towering homerun by Dillion Dingler in the sixth inning gave the Tigers the lead. After that, the Tigers never looked back, scoring four runs in the seventh and would be enough for Will Vest to close out the game for the Tigers.
The Tigers will face the Seattle Marines in the ALDS starting on Saturday, October 4th.
Boston Red Sox at the New York Yankees. Yankees win the series 2-1.
This historic and fierce rivalry went down to the very last out of this wild card matchup. The Red Sox got the series started with Garret Crochet throwing a gem by striking out 11 through 7.2 innings of work. This, along with a few runs to support, led to a game one win for the Red Sox. Ben Rice got game two started for the Yankees with a two-run homerun in the first inning. This helped the momentum for the rest of the game and led to the Yankees winning game two and forcing a game three. The Yankees starting pitcher Cam Schlitter had the best performance of his young career allowing zero runs through eight innings of work and 12 strikeouts. This performance alone was enough for the Yankees to secure the Wild Card win.
The Yankees will face the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALDS starting on Saturday, October 4th.
