High School seniors all over the world are hopping onto the trend of bringing kindergarten backpacks with them to school, starting at the beginning of their Senior Year.
Starting with a TikTok trend in 2021, it has since gained momentum around the world. Seniors are embracing this trend to relive those fleeting childhood moments before entering society, clinging to the youth they are slowly growing out of.
Students are encouraging their classmates to get involved in the Senior Backpack trend, allowing them to embrace their inner child as they start to grow up. My senior backpack was bought a week before school because one of my friends convinced me to get one, and that we should match.
I interviewed Holy Family Seniors about why they got their specific senior backpacks. We have backpacks featuring all over from Spiderman, Minnie Mouse, Cars and even Disney Princesses.
I interviewed a student who told me the reason for her backpack was, “because I like Spiderman and it goes with my senior pants that also have Spiderman on them.” She then went on to mention that, “it also lights up, which is really cool.”
Another student picked their Cars backpacks because, “I love the movie cars, and specifically this backpack because when you hit it, the lightning bolt lights up.”
Although most students who are participating in this trend are female, one male student I interviewed talked about how, “I spent 100 dollars already on it, so I might as well use it.” This backpack has a working screen on it.
This one student has a Strawberry Shortcake backpack because during her childhood, “I really liked Strawberry Shortcake.”
The trend, you can see from just those few student responses, is that many people’s main motivation behind their backpacks is that they just really like the specific character or movie from their childhood. Teachers and Admin don’t mind the trend; they actually even think it’s a fun thing for seniors to do and get involved in.
We also have cases of students not buying senior backpacks because “I spent a lot of money on my other backpack.” So although many students did get senior backpacks, many also did not.
