We are less than 20 days away is one of the most anticipated events of the year. Homecoming season for some, is a time of excitement while for others more stress than celebration.
Previously the first week of October, the awaited homecoming falls almost 15 days earlier leaving 15 less days for the planning and execution of this night. A tight timeline may add to the stress or excitement, depending on who you ask. Student Priya Lucas says it is “too early. It’s not enough time to prepare.” This being said, Grace Mischker says, “I don’t mind it. I will still be tan.” Yearbook, journalism, and newspaper teacher, Mr. Yunt, says, “Get it out of the way. I’m all for it. I like homecoming season. I like spirit days.”
Adding to the pressure of the HoCo season is a search for a date. The smaller timeline leaves many trying to figure out who they’re going with, including how to ask, on top of other commitments during this time. While many students choose to go solo, Keenan Hughes is asking his girlfriend saying the shortened timeline adds “a lot of pressure.” Another student states, “I don’t like how it’s in September because we’ve always done it in October so it makes it hard to get a dress so last minute. I’m not as excited as I was the previous years.”
Even despite the date change, many students say the dance isn’t very enjoyable anyways. One student said, “Every year it’s the same thing everyone just stands in the corner, the music is terrible. The teachers do too much ands are too suspicious. They should decorate more. Nobody dances.” Another said, “The before and after is way more fun the actual dance. It’s annoying we can’t leave whenever we want. We should be able to bring whoever we want with us from other schools.”
Homecoming season brings a mix of emotions among the students, from the earlier timespan, finding a date, or just the dance in general, some look forward to the celebrations while others dread the stress that come with it. No matter how students and teachers may feel, homecoming is essential to the high school experience year after year.
