Holy Family High School has their first home football game this Friday against Roosevelt. The first home game of the season is more than just a sporting event. It combines sports, school spirit, a community gathering, and most importantly tradition.
For students, it is one of the first events outside of school of the academic calendar. It is a chance for students to express their school spirit, dressing up from head to toe in purple and gold, or the other fun themes. These themes include red, white, and blue, black out, white out, neon, or dressing up in costumes on Halloween. As the lights turn on, on Friday night, the bleachers are filled with all students ready to support and cheer for the varsity football team. Junior Olivia Brouwer states, “I love going to the home football games because it is a social event and I can hangout with my friends while cheering on our really good team.” Along with students coming to support, the immediate and extended families of players, families of the Holy Family Community, and younger generations waiting to attend Holy Family all come show school spirit for their local football team.
The first home game of the season is not just a big deal for the fans, but also a huge deal for the varsity players, the cheerleaders, the band, and the younger players. This first home game is a testament to all the hardwork the players have put in to showcase to their fans. Senior football player, William Perrotto states, “It will be super fun and I’m excited. It will be a testament to how far we have all come, not just myself.”
As a senior, who has been on the team for four years, he says that his last first home game means a lot to him and he wants to show out for the home crowd on Friday night. As well as the players who have to prepare the cheerleaders, poms, and band members also have to prepare for their home debut. Senior Poms Captain, Grace Mischker states, “It’s really sad to think about, that it is my last first game because I remember my first game freshman year thinking it would go by so slow.” She also says, “It is cool that we are playing one of our rivals, Roosevelt, so I am excited to see who wins, and excited to lead the chants this year as a senior.”
The first home game of the season is always a big deal, and regardless of the outcome it is a fun celebration with the community. Everyone has a different reason to show up to the game, whether it is to show up for your child, show school spirit, prove yourself as a player, or cherish a fun memory of your high school career. No matter what, everyone in our community is looking forward to the first home football game this Friday.
