Famous Actress Sidney Sweeney has been receiving backlash over an American Eagle ad, promoting jeans.
The ad used a slogan using the word ”genes” instead of “jeans” implying she had “Good Jeans”. Most people found it offensive, as the ad came off as a harmful ideology to genetic superiority.
The ad spread around all Tik Tok with people criticizing the actress and how she should be more aware of how the campaign might be perceived, especially since she’s a a pretty popular public figure.
One user on Tik Tok said “As a white man.. her ad quite directly said these jeans are for white, blued eye blondes? … Am I not understanding it?” This comment got a lot of attention with people agreeing the ad fully had a harmful ideology to genetic superiority and who the jeans are made for. Others were defending the actress explaining that actors usually don’t have control of what they say over an ad or have no idea what the ad will come out looking like.
A few days after the ad came out and blew up on Tik Tok, Sydney Sweeney addressed the situation on Instagram live. She explained the pressure of being on the spotlight and the struggles and hate it comes with it. She said, she’s just human and makes mistakes, and wouldn’t have done the ad if she knew how much hate it came with it. On live, it showed her being in bed crying watching a show, stating she’s just human.
This also sparked big controversy about the advertising responsibility. People argued that ads should be more aware and cautious about the language and imagery that are used in marketing campaigns especially when sensitive topics like genetics are misinterpreted. So far American Eagle hasn’t addressed the situation and still have the ads on all their platforms.
