After last season the Holy Family cheerleading team was left with just four girls. At the start of this season the team saw a boost in numbers. A team of four turned into a team of 11 on varsity and a new junior varsity spirit team with nine girls. Now what have these two teams been working on for the summer?
The varsity team began their season at D Elite cheerleading camp. This camp was led by different college cheerleaders who taught varsity new stunt skills to bring into their season. The next weekend they attended UCA cheer camp with JV spirit. HF cheer had a successful week with three superior ribbons as well as three UCA all American, Finley Clark, Araiya Herrera, and Sabrina Merrion.
Weeks later Holy Family Alumni Sofia Mazzulla and Olivia Williams came back to choreograph their traditional routine. This routine with be showcased in the intermediate division at UCA nationals in January. Varsity also spent hours choreographing two others routines one that is game-day and one that is combined game-day with Holy Family Poms team. This combined game-day routine will showcase for the first time ever both teams on one floor in one routine.
The JV spirit team spent their summer working hard in preparation for this upcoming football season. They are training weekly in poms style dance, and well as cheerleading. This new JV sprit team is creating a team of well rounded athlete in both teams so they will be more successful on Varsity, on whatever team they end up on. This team is led by another Holy Family alumni Ally Merrion. As a former HF cheerleader she is a valuable asset to the JV and Varsity cheerleading teams here.
The varsity cheerleading team will begin their football season on August 30th at the varsity football game against Northridge, and their competition season on November 1st.
