The Met Gala is a fundraising benefit for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City that is held every year on the first Monday in May. The event raises eight-figure sums. This year they have raised $31 million. There are museum reports that it’s the biggest gross in the starry, storied event’s 77 year history.
A theme is announced beforehand and celebrities create a iconic outfit to show off. The theme this year is Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. The theme is inspired from Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. The exhibition is organized into 12 sections; Ownership, Presence, Distinction, Disguise, Freedom, Champion, Respectability, Jook, Heritage, Beauty, Cool, and Cosmopolitanism. The 2024 Met Gala theme was “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”, while the 2023 Met Gala theme honored Karl Lagerfeld, who was a regular attendee at The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute.
The people that hosted this year is Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and Anna Wintour co-chaired the 2025 Met Gala, with LeBron James who served as an honorary chair. The event usually hosts about 450 attendees, welcoming stars, young creatives, and paragons from the worlds of fashion, the arts, sports, and politics.
Some of the best dressed was; Rocky wearing his own AWGE design that featured a slick double-breasted technical wool jacket, inspired by the outdoorsy Marmot jackets that he would see around Harlem growing up. Blazers, pants, and ties were seen all night. Shorts suits (Doechii in Louis Vuitton!), formal tailcoats, or vests worn without jackets, was seen all night in all different styles. A few gowns and skirts were also worthy of a best-dressed. Anne Hathaway’s Carolina Herrera shirt and ball gown, an homage to the great André Leon Talley. Cynthia Erivo dazzled in a shimmering jacket and ball skirt by Givenchy.
