Empire of the Sun is an Australian electronic music duo that was formed in 2007. Formed in 2007 by musicians Luke Steele of The Sleepy Jackson and Nick Littlemore of Pnau, the band quickly distinguished itself through both its sound and visual presentation. Their debut album, Walking on a Dream (2008), introduced listeners to a dreamlike musical world filled with vibrant melodies. Songs like “Walking on a Dream” and “We Are the People” became international hits, marking the band as a fresh and visionary voice in electronic pop music.
Known for their elaborate costumes, fantastical music videos, and science fiction-inspired themes, the duo crafts an immersive artistic experience that blurs the line between music and visual art. They are widely known for their crazy costumes and elaborate stage sets. Their follow-up albums, Ice on the Dune (2013) and Two Vines (2016), continued this trend, combining
futuristic concepts with rich, atmospheric sets.
Musically, Empire of the Sun draws heavily from 1980s synthpop, blending elements of glam rock, new wave, and electronic dance music. Their influences include iconic acts such as Prince, and Daft Punk. They have created entirely their own image, and creation of sound. Their work resonates with listeners not just for its catchy sounds, but also for the sense of creating another reality in the form of music.
Empire of the Sun stands as a testament to the power of artful collaboration and creative vision. Their fusion of music, fashion, and fantasy has created a lasting legacy in modern pop culture. As they continue to evolve, fans remain eager to see where their next journey through sound and spectacle will lead.
The Empire of the Sun is currently on tour right now and will be in Morrison, Colorado at Red Rocks on April 28th. I will be attending with my friends and we have decently close seats and i’m so excited.
