Tuesday Night, the Tmrw. Golf League had its official debut, hosting the first-ever simulator-based golf tournament with The Bay Golf Club defeating the New York Golf Club 9-2. The idea behind the league is for there to be weekly matches between two teams of tour pros. The goal of the league is to speed up play for the viewers to watch easily. To help with this, they introduced a 40 second shot clock between each shot.
The league is set up with a giant 64 x 53 foot simulator powered by Full Swing, which is four times larger than any other simulator there is. The tee shots are played like usual hitting into the screen but the best part of the league is seen after any shots after the tee. For all approach shots, the players hit out of real grass or sand depending on the lie the simulator gave them. It gets even cooler as shots get around 50 yards and in of the green. The simulator’s technology works to show the exact spot the ball needs to be dropped exactly to an inch and the players move to a physical, custom-built GreenZone, a 22,475-square-foot short game area that transforms between holes. The GreenZone includes a 41-yard-wide turntable that rotates the green to change approach angles and can morph its topography using nearly 600 actuators.
The matches between the two teams are scored on a hole by hole basis in a match play format with the winner of the hole winning a point with each team having a “hammer” which will double the point value of the hole for the team.
Every Tuesday there will be another match between any two of the six teams that are a part of the TGL. The teams consist of all professional players. The teams consist of:
