With five dead already the wildfires in California are still spreading making it hard to keep these blazes contained. More than 100,00 people have been evacuated from Hollywood hills already and more to come soon.
The fires are also making it more difficult for sports teams. The game between Los Angeles Kings and Calgary Flames was postponed due to the air quality.
The Los Angeles Chargers announced they will be donating $200,00 to wildfire relief.
After interviewing Camille Snashall, who still has family in the area, we got an inside look at what it’s like for people living there.
“I lived in California for 12 years and moved during Covid, my dad and three siblings, sister in law, and niece still lice there. My childhood home is still there and lots of my cousins, aunts, uncles, friends, etc. Hearing of this that is burning their houses is heartbreaking. I flew out the day it started and it did not look good it looked horrible and there’s nothing they could do because winds were so strong airspace wasn’t allowed and we were out of water. I go back there every other week and every holiday season so thinking about going back for spring break summer etc. and it all being burnt around me, my neighborhood and Pasadena a place I am super familiar with is unimaginable. I really hope my childhood home is okay and that I won’t have to experience that having to see all of that destruction when I go back sounds so hard and helping friends and family who experienced it is even worse.”
How has the fire impacted you personally?
“The fire has impacted me personally because a lot of my friends who live there houses burned down. The fire is north, south, and west of my house and within miles. It has been tragic to see the place I grew up destroyed and a lot of my friends houses burned to the grown. Hopefully our house will be okay. When I first heard about the fires I was not too worried because it was in the Palisades which is a bit far from us and then another one started in Eaton Canyon which is super close to us and one in Hollywood which is also very close. I was really scared I would never see my home again and not get to say goodbye and all of our stuff would be gone. Thankfully I am okay for now, but not sure after this Hollywood fire started.”
How close was the fire to your house?
“The Eaton Canyon started from a brush fire, winds were 100mph in my town and it was hot. It has burned 11,000 acres so far and so many families and friends houses. They are so devastated and I don’t even know how to help. The Hollywood fire started where the Hollywood sign is just from high winds and heat as well. I don’t see it being contained because they have no water and not enough firemen. I hope it puts itself out or stops somehow because it is so devastating and taking people’s home. It is a place I grew up and knowing it will never be the the same breaks my heart. The park I went to, my grade school, friends homes I played at, a country club I visited often etc. It’s so hard to imagine it being burned and no longer there to see and go to for fun.”
Is there anything else you would like to tell us about the fires?
“Pray for the people of California specifically Los Angeles. The people I know who’s houses were destroyed don’t know what they are going to do next and some of their schools burned. They don’t know what the future holds but are super nervous. It is terrible and going to be a long rebuilding period. Thank you.”
