This Tuesday, December 16th, at 6 pm ET, the Crypto.com Showdown is set to take place. It is a new high stakes premier golf competition featuring Major winners Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau, and Brooks Koepka. Between the 4 golfers, they have won a total of 18 majors since 2011 including two in the past year with Scheffler taking home the Green Jacket at the Masters and Bryson DeChambeau edging out McIlroy in the US open.
The two teams consist of Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka, players from the LIV tour competing against Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, who are a part of the PGA tour.
Elements of traditional international team golf will be blended into a single 18-hole match-play event. Shadow Creek’s 18-hole course, which is where they are playing, will be divided into three six-hole sections, with each segment assigned a point value. Best ball will lead off the first six holes. This is a format where the two teams will both play their own ball and the best score at the end of the hole will count towards the team’s total score at the end of the six holes. Following that will be six holes of alternate shot throughout the middle stretch of the course. Alternate shot consists of the two teams alternating which player hits each shot switching off every stroke. The final 6 holes will be singles matches between one player from each of the two teams. The Singles matches are yet to be announced if it will be match play (a point awarded for every hole won) or stroke play (total strokes taken over the entire 6 hole span). I think the match would be more entertaining if they played match play because it keeps the match entertaining throughout the entire 6 holes.
Two time Masters Champion Bubba Watson will be part of the on course commentating live during the match. Besides being a two time Masters champion he was a professional golfer on the LIV tour for a number of years and his 2025 season status is yet to be announced.
The winner will be walking away with the first-ever multi-million-dollar professional sports prize purse in CRO Cryptocurrency.
