College basketball kicked off five weeks ago and has been craziness from the start. College basketball might be the most unpredictable and entertaining college sport we have. Typically everyone starts to tune in around March Madness time and are shocked by the upsets that go down, when in reality the whole season is full of upsets and entertaining games.
Since the season started Kansas has been the top ranked team the whole season but finally fell last night to an unranked Creighton team 76-63 resulting in their first loss of the season. To add to the craziness #2 Auburn, #4 Kentucky, #5 Marquette, #11 Wisconsin, #14 Cincinnati, #15 Baylor, #18 Pitt, and #20 North Carolina all lost in the last two days. #2 ranked Auburn had a tough matchup last night but ultimately fell to Duke in the final seconds of the game which gave them their first loss of the season as well. With this many ranked teams losing in one week, the top 25 rankings will be all mixed up next week just adding to the craziness.
Even going back to Thanksgiving week and the early season tournaments, upsets, and craziness were going down. The biggest story from this week was UConn, which was in #2 at the time, was upset three times by Memphis, Colorado, and Dayton. They went into the Maui Invitational being the heavy favorites and lost all three of their four games, coming out nearly dead last, which shows the unpredictability of the sport.
Over the first month of the 2024-2025 season, there have been plenty of upsets already, and conference play hasn’t even started. Conference play begins this upcoming week, and there will be even more craziness to go down. With more and more NIL being added to college sports, the talent will continue to spread out throughout all the D1 schools teams, leading to more balanced teams, resulting in closer games between the powerhouses and nonpower four schools
