Jannik Sinner is an Italian professional tennis player. He plays singles and is currently the #1 in the world. He is the first Italian to ever reach that ranking. He has won two grand slams and the most recent U.S. Open a big milestone in his career.
He has recently been accused of using drugs (steroids) to enhance his performance. He claims not to know these drugs were being used by a trainer he had who he has since been fired.
Umberto Ferrara bought a spray that containing the steroid Clostebol and anabolic steroid used for cuts or scrapes. This is a drug you can get over the counter in Italy. It when then given to Naldi Sinners trainer for a cut on his finger. Naldi was then giving Sinner a massage not wearing gloves which spread this drug to Sinner. When he gave his urine test later the drug was found. The amount of steroids found on Sinner was a small percentage not able to significantly affect him.
This incident drew questions and concerns to other players about his success to come but also keeping in mind his success before any allegations or enhancements. Sinner responded to these claims by saying “I will now put this challenging and deeply unfortunate period behind me. I will continue to do everything I can to ensure I continue to comply with the sports anti doping program and I have a team around me that are meticulous in their own compliance.”
Sinner was originally suspended for his two positive results of steroids. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) who controls anti-doping and anti corruption investigations for tennis accepted the explanation he gave. They concluded that Sinner was not at fault for this and would be able to play again. He then played in the US open winning yet again another title.
