- UFC 306 was a historic night for the UFC, it was the first event hosted by Dana White and the UFC at the Sphere in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was also celebrating Noche Day which was the following day.
The main event was a championship fight in the bantamweight division between the crowd favorite Sugar Sean O’Malley (current Champ) vs Merab Dvalishvili. The Co-Main event was between Valentina Shevchenko vs Alexa Grasso (current champ).
The fight at the sphere was something special Dana White payed 60 million dollars to host the event. The average ticket to go was $1,681.
Honoring Noche day the main card had 4 out of 5 fighters being Mexican. Two of them won their fight, Alex Grasso lost in decision, it was mostly a wrestling match. Daniel Zellhuber vs Esteban Ribovics was personally my favorite fight, it was a constant battle and no takedowns. Both fighters were in moments where I thought it was over, Esteban Ribovics from Argentina came out on top in decision.
Let’s talk about the main event, Suga Sean is one of my favorite fighters but his opponent is a beast. This fight from the walkouts to the bells ringing I was on my toes. Merab solidified the ground game by taking over and controlling the fight. Majority of the fight was on the ground and a dominating performance from Merab.
The last round, Sean showed some life but it was just a little too late, Sean sent a up kick to the front of the stomach and hurt Merab so he couldn’t finish. Merab’s hand got raised and became the new bantamweight champion.
There were two champions uncrowned Saturday night in the first UFC event at the Sphere.
The sphere was unreal, the technology was absurd. Even watching it through a screen it still felt like it was an illusion. I can see more events hosted by the UFC and Dana White at the sphere moving forward.
