With the NFL Draft recently concluding, it shaped out to be one of the more interesting drafts, with some shocking picks, and cool stats, giving us a ton of things to talk about. The 2024 draft class feautures a lot of young talent, and guys that we will see with a starting role on their respective teams.
The first pick of the draft was the Chicago Bears and to absolutely no ones suprise they went with University of Southern California QB Caleb Williams. Williams was a standout player in the most recent seasons for the Trojans, and this year he finished with a high 68.6% completion rate, 3,633 yards, 30 touchdowns and only 5 interceptions.
After the first pick, the Washington Commanders and New England Patriots followed up picking 2 more quaterbacks in Jayden Daniels out of LSU, and Drake Maye from UNC. Daniels was the most recent season Heisman Trophy Winner, and is a dual threat quaterback who will fit well in Washingtons “arrow concept” scheme perfected by former superbowl champ Eric Bieniemy.
With the 4th pick, the Arizona Cardinals picked up the first non-quarterback with Ohio States WR Marvin Harrison Jr., son of Marvin Harrison who was inducted into the National Football League Hall of Fame in 2016, so he is a pretty promising player.
A few more solid picks from teams buiding a foundation for what they lacked last year were made, and this is where the draft gets interesting. The Atlanta Falcons had the 8th pick of the draft, and needed some help on the defensive side of the ball, they have a lot of young talent at skill positions, and recently traded for QB Kirk Cousins on a 180 million dollar contract. The falcons pick was in, and was shocking to say the least. The Falcons decided to draft Michael Penix Jr, QB out of Washington. People are still confused why they went with a QB when they had such a valueable pick, and just signed a veteran QB on a huge contract.
Then with pick number 9, the Chicago Bears were back up, and got a great pick in Washington WR Rome Odunze, who will be a great pair with Caleb Williams. The Bears have what is on paper one of the stronger offenses in the league, as they also recently traded for runningback Deandre Swift.
Our hometown Denver Broncos also made an intersting pick, and have gotten a lot of different reactions from it. They picked Oregon QB Bo Nix at the 12 spot. The reason this pick is so interesting is because they recently traded for Zach Wilson, and I imagine they will be fighting for the starting spot in training camp.
A team that I think got a complete steal in the draft was the reigning champions, the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs traded up a few spots to the 28th pick from the 32nd and got a speedy WR in Xaview Worthy out of Texas. Worthy ran a 4.21 which broke the NFL combine record previously of 4.22. The Chiefs added another weapon and the scariest part is, Patrick Mahomes basically has another Tyreek Hill.
Lastly, the New York Jets had the 257th pick of the draft (Mr. Irrelevant) and went with DB Jaylen Key out of Alabama. Key will be looking to make a name for himself as previous 2022 Mr Irrelevant Brock Purdy did.
