Baseball is so back, and its better than ever.
Today I’m going to talk about one of the most potentially exciting teams to watch this year.
But first, we’re about 10 games into the season and there’s already been some noticeable headlines. Starting off with something a little somber, Guardians ace Shane Bieber has to undergo elbow surgery and is going to be sidelined the rest of the 2024 season and most of the 2025 season. This is a huge blow to the Guardian’s pitching staff, as Bieber is one of the top pitchers in the league.
Another unfortunate elbow injury that has occurred has plagued my glorious king Spencer Strider. Strider, the number one pitcher on the Braves, and arguably the number one pitcher in the league, has UCL damage that almost always leads to Tommy John surgery. Tommy John surgery is a common surgery in baseball for pitchers who need reconstructive surgery on their elbow.
It has become way more common the past year due to the pitch clock rule being implemented. The pitch clock rule requires pitchers to pitch the ball within a certain amount of time, otherwise it is called a ball automatically. Last year, players were openly against this rule, stating it disregarded player safety and forced pitchers to throw too much too fast without adequate rest.
There were many elbow injuries to pitchers last year, and way more than the usual amount. The player’s concerns are starting to bear fruit once again this year. It’ll be shaky to see how the rest of the season will play out for these two teams without their best arm.
Moving on from that somber note, a few positive things that happened within the past few games have been some nukes. Bryce Harper hit three home-runs against the Reds at home the other night. To top it off, the last home run was a grand slam. Harper has only hit three home runs in a single game once in his career. Speaking of grand slams, Ryan McMahon hit a walk off grand slam against the Tampa Bay Rays in the home opener. For those of you who don’t know, Ryan McMahon is the Rockies third baseman who is an absolute stud. He’s probably one of our best players, but knowing our general managers, we’ll probably trade him for a second round pick and a bag of chips.
Anyways, this might be an obvious pick, but one of the most exciting teams to watch this year is going to be the Orioles. The Orioles are one of the youngest teams, but one of the most electric. They have one of the best farm systems in the league, and it shows. The amount of talent they have coming up is going to be scary to see.
Right now between Adley Rutschmen, Gunnar Henderson, and new pitcher and potential ace in Corbin Burnes, the Orioles are going to be a fun team to watch. With farm players Jackson Holliday, Heston Kjerstad, and Enrique Bradfield Jr., they are set for future years to come. Holliday is notably the number one prospect in all of Triple A, and for good reason. He’ll surely get brought up this year at some point, and it’ll be fun to see.
