Its Gypsy’s World, We’re Just Living in it

Gypsy Rose Blanchard, having experienced imprisonment both as a victim of her mother’s actions and later as an inmate, is now poised to embrace a new chapter of freedom after serving over eight years behind bars. Having been incarcerated for her involvement in the murder of her abusive mother, Clauddine (Dee Dee) Blanchard, Gypsy is determined to share her side of the story before embarking on her fresh start. In her upcoming docuseries, “The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard,” the 32-year-old narrates her journey in her own words, aiming to set the record straight about her past. Gypsy’s case has become one of the most talked about, mainstream cases in history.

During her childhood, Dee Dee succeeded in convincing not only Gypsy but also everyone else, including medical professionals, that Gypsy suffered from various chronic health issues such as leukemia, muscular dystrophy, and brain damage. It is believed that Dee Dee exhibited signs of Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a mental health disorder where a caregiver projects diagnoses or induces symptoms in a dependent.

Surprisingly, Gypsy holds no grudge against her mother. She said in an interview, “My mother isolated me, and herself, from her side of the family, and my dad’s side of the family, at a pretty young age for me. I was probably about six years old when she started removing us a little more, and moving away from our hometown that we grew up in. I don’t hold anything against anyone. I don’t hold a grudge. I’ve actually told them all that. I’m like, ‘I don’t put blame on you guys because I was six years old when she took me from you guys, and I understand that you guys were just as much in the dark as everybody else was.”

At the age of 23, Gypsy approached her then-boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn, whom she had met online, and asked him to kill her mother. Godejohn carried out the act by fatally stabbing Dee Dee 17 times while she was asleep. He is currently serving a life sentence for the murder that took place in 2015.

Gypsy, who was released on parole in December, married 37-year-old schoolteacher Ryan Anderson while still an inmate. The couple, who initially connected through a pen pal program, got married in June 2022. Since her release, Ryan has been accompanying Gypsy, offering support as they navigate daily life together, especially during a demanding press tour.

Gypsy says, “I see myself today as someone trying to come out of prison and start her new life. I’m just trying to remake myself — reinvent myself into something that my family could be proud of. That my husband can be proud of. I think I’m getting there. I don’t think I’m quite there yet, but I’m liking this new version of myself.”
