If you’ve headed north on 1-25 in the past year, it is hard to miss the construction being done off of the highway and County Road 48.
Construction is progressing on the nation’s most beloved gas station. The country store gas station and travelers station is coming to Colorado. Texas based Buc-ees company held a groundbreaking ceremony way back in June 2022 to kick off construction at the new location north of the Denver metro area, in Johnstown, at the southwest corner of Interstate 25 and County Road 48.
Construction on Colorado’s Buc-ee’s has continued for more than a year, and it makes sense considering the immense size that is to be marveled at by travelers.
Recently a building now towers over I-25 with rows and rows of gas pumps and a structure large enough to be a Costco behind it, while it is bear right now. Soon it will feature the iconic beaver and store a quarter million gallons of fuel.
Buc-ee’s said it hopes to open the new Johnstown location in spring of 2024. The new Colorado location is planned to be 74,000 square feet, with 116 fueling stations and, of course, the chain’s award-winning clean bathrooms.
It will also feature their famous brisket sandwiches smoked and made fresh in front of you. All Buc-ee’s operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Buc-ee’s had begun hiring for the Colorado store. Positions include cashier, merchandise associate, food service, warehouse stocker, grocery stocker, janitorial, human resources, and management. Applications are posted online and on the interstate.
“This is something that’s going to be an amazing thing for the town of Johnstown and the entire region” said Johnstown Mayor Gary Lebsack. “We look at this as the gateway to retail for northern Colorado.”
Some feel threatened by this message and would rather keep the small Johnstown charm. The Colorado Buc-ees was to become the largest in the country, but another one in Texas is also under way and will occupy more than 75,000 square feet, making it the largest Buc-ee’s ever built.
“It’s a beautiful day. We’re blessed to be in such a wonderful country, and to have the opportunity to build here and serve people,” said Buc-ees co-founder Arch Aplin III. “I always knew Colorado would be a wonderful state for Buc-ee’s. The people in this state are our kind of customer: active, traveling, wanting to be outdoors. We made a big leap geographically to get here, and we’re excited about it. We’re not looking back.”
The planned Colorado location signals the first move outside of the South for Buc-ee’s. Between Alabama, Florida and Georgia. Buc-ees has more than 50 locations. with more than 40 in Texas alone. It looks like they plan on growing till the Beaver is in all states.
