Colorado High School basketball has plans to implement a shot clock in the 2026-2027. The new implication plans will be for both boys and girls basketball. The new shot clock would be implemented to all varsity levels and lower levels will be able to use them but will not be required. Over the past few months many of the CHSAA members have been meeting and discussing the new shot clock. They have been talking about pros cons of this new thing.
Because of the district budgets, they will be voting on the new shot clock in the meeting in November. The schools will be given a 24 month notice to be able to get the new shot clocks put up and paid for. The state of Colorado would become the 28th state to add the new shot clock into the high school games. It would be the second impactful new decision for Colorado hoops as they just implemented the new classification of 6A.
Many coaches around the state have been in favor of the shot clock idea. Many of the coaches had concerns ass well about the cost of it, the person that is going to run it, and different procedures. Ultimately CHSAA is going to be the ones who either accept the new implication or decline it in an upcoming meeting.
As a player this will be very impactful of how you are going to play the game. At the end of the game you are going to have to learn how to play the game without holding onto the ball. It is going to be interesting to see how coaches adjust with there coaching style. You may start to see teams play more zone defense as it will force the defense to get quick and long shots. The scoring of these games will start to be a lot higher as you will see a lot more shots being put up a game.
The shot clock will allow for less and less stalling tactics by teams and you will see higher scoring games. I think the addition to the shot clock will be very good for the state of Colorado. When you get higher scoring games the games will be more exciting and who doesn’t like an exciting game.
Ultimately the state of Colorado adding the shot clock to high school basketball games will be very impactful to the teams around the state. And will be very interesting to see how coaches and players are able to adjust to this new style of the game that we have never seen in the state of Colorado high school basketball.
