There was a lot of news to come out of two football games played in California being between the Colorado Buffaloes and the UCLA Bruins, and the Southern California Trojans vs. the University of California Berkeley Golden Bears. But interesting enough, a lot of it had to do with off the field matters.
Last Saturday, the 24th ranked team in the country, University of Southern California faced off against the University of California Berkeley, who had an upsetting 3-4 record going into the game.
The game was set to kickoff at 1 PM Pacific Time. But kickoff was delayed, as there was 15 people appearing to sit on the logo at midfield back to back with their arms crossed. The players were all in shock just standing on the sidelines waiting for the game to get underway.
All of the protesters had shirts on that said “Justice for Ivonne” which left fans and viewers even more confused about what all of this was.
Ivonne Del Valle, who is a professor at the University of California Berkeley, was suspended 5 years ago after receiving allegations of stalking and harrasing a professor from the University of California Davis. Wether or not Ivonne is guilty or not, people question the students actions and think there is better ways, and places to protest.
The reason the students were protesting was because of the lack of attention The University of California Berkeley was bringing to the attention, and how they were putting it all off, not reinstating Professor Del Valle.
Regardless of what everyone thought of the situation. It went on for approximately 10 minutes before the stadium security and police officers detained the 15 people (13 of which are students at the University of California Berkeley) and took them to Alameda County Jail.
Now even though you don’t see that every weekend, it still might not have been the craziest off field story of the weekend… In California.
Just 6 hours down the road, The Colorado Buffs and the UCLA Bruins were set to kickoff at 4:30 PM, and although this game didn’t have any protesters delaying the game, it had its own interesting twist.
After a good fight from the Buffs, they did not only take an L on the field, but also when they got back into the locker room. Multiple individuals realized that they were missing their jewelry.
Colorado safety Cam’Ron Silmon-Craig as well as several other Buffaloes players were understandably upset about the situation. One player in the video can be heard saying, “I just got mine, bro. I had the jewelry box and everything, bro. They took it off my jewelry box.”
Not only were the victims of the thiefs upset, but everyone involved. Bruins Head Coach Chip Kelly said after he heard the news said “That’s awful for anybody…You would think that when you go anywhere that your valuables are safe.”
The UCLA athletic department apologized for the incident and filed a report to the Pasadena Police Department.
With both of these stories, which do you think is crazier?
