The House of Representatives is in search for a new speaker of the house after Kevin McCarthy was suddenly voted out of office becoming the first person ever a person has been removed in this way.
Although the Republicans hold the majority in the house it is by a very narrow margin. So when eight Republicans flipped and joined the Democrats in voting there was no hope left for Mr. McCarthy and the result of the vote was 216-210. After taking 15 votes and 4 days to get him elected in, it only took one vote to remove the former Speaker of the House.
McCarthy was removed in a rebellion led by Florida congressman Matt Gaetz after McCarthy used democratic votes to pass a short-term spending deal to avoid a government shut down. This rebellion has been ready to explode for a long time however. Back in January, they tried to block his election on the grounds that he could not be trusted to enact conservative principals.
Some democrats seem thrilled with the chaos that came from removing Kevin McCarthy from the house. “Nobody trusts Kevin McCarthy,” said Pramila Jayapal, a liberal Democratic congresswoman on Tuesday. They were not happy with his dropping of Ukrainian aid in the in the short-term funding bill and that’s just one example of stuff he has done to infuriate the party.
The vote to decide who the new speaker of the house will be is set to take place on October 11th but it may take much longer than that to find someone who can get the backing of the house. With the conflict inside the majority republican party it will be extremely hard to find someone to bring together the house.
The removal comes with many problems though as the House of Representatives have many problems to figure out in the next week while the new speaker of the house is supposed to be figured out.
