If you have frequented Las Vegas anytime since 2018 you might have noticed construction on a plot of land next to the Venetian. That has been the MSG sphere, a new groundbreaking way to experience all types of arena activities. Friday night, a red carpet event kicked off the opening night for the first performance at the Sphere. The U2 residency show taking place at 8 p.m. The show was completely sold out, however tickets remain for future dates scheduled through December.
The structure itself completely changes the Las Vegas Strip. It is the biggest sphere shaped building in the world and completely re-imagined the feats of entertainment. It is not one solid screen but small LED pucks, that when viewed from a far it reveals the image mimicking a computer or TV screen.
The world’s highest-resolution LED screen will dominate the interior of the Sphere, with a 4-acre interior screen that will surround the stage and audience to create a completely immersive visual environment. At its highest point, the interior screen which is the size of about four football fields, will tower 240 feet above the stage. The steel framework supporting the 160,000 square-foot screen and the 160,000 speaker multilayered audio system weighs about 730 tons.
The first show has already proved the immersive experience that only comes from the sphere. U2 has a history with being ambitious in their shows. Still, this production sets a new age for the relationship between humans and technology. The advancement already displayed a cascade of numbers and letters turning the Sphere into a much smaller box and another where a photo-realistic Las Vegas landscape almost tricks your eye into believing you’re outside. There was also a goofy if technically impressive bit on Friday that had Bono pushing a fan in a real rope swing attached to an illustrated balloon.
While controversial in the constructing and overall appeal, it did not take much to prove that the newest addition to Sin City is one centered around a new way to live out concerts, award shows, cinema, sporting and more. The entertainment capital of the world just upped the ante.
