There are plenty of new faces you may see running around the school, and this particular person introduced herself at the first all school mass of the 2023-2024 school year.
Her name is Mrs. Devenny! Mr. Yunt suggested that the staff did some interviews of the new teachers and administration at the school. Mrs. Devenny seemed like a great person that always has a good attitude so I chose to interview her.
When I got into her office it automatically felt like a home, there were couches, chairs, ottomans, and everything you could ever want! It was cool to see that her office was set up comfortably opposed to just a computer with a chair and other random stuff that does not give it a “homey” vibe at all.
My first question was just getting to know who Mrs. Devenny is, where she came from, and all of those questions relating to her background.
She said that she was born and raised in Broomfield, Colorado. She went to Nativity Faith and Reason K-8 and is a Holy Family High School Alumni who graduated in the year 2012 so she has been very involved in the Broomfield area and her faith. She is one of four girls in her family, one of her sisters graduated from Holy family in 2008, and then two of her younger sisters which are twins, graduated from Holy Family in 2016.
Her family is definitely Broomfield Natives and are clearly active in their faith here. Her family still lives in the same house they did since she was a kid, right here in Broomfield.
So what is the reason that Mrs. Devenny is back at Holy Family High School? This is because she is bringing a program to Holy Family that’s called “Ut Fidem” which is Latin for “Keep the Faith”. She said that the reason she is bringing this program to Holy Family is unfortunate but true, and that is the statistic that 80% of people leave the Catholic Church by the young age of 25. Even worse, but 75% of that 80% decide to no longer be catholic at the age of 13.
A group in Iowa realized that they were all sending their kids to catholic school their whole lives and then it was just not translating when they went to college, and they were growing apart from their faith. This group started a small group ministry which was just groups of friends who get paired up with an adult that is active in their faith with similar interests, who just leads the small group through applicable things to your faith.
The goal is that these groups are more emotional and real opposed to lecturing in something like a theology class. She wrapped Ut Fidem up in one line and explained it as “Its a small group ministry for high school kids with a goal of helping you have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.”
